5 questions with Matt Martinez of Landmine Marathon

!. You’re touring much more than you used to.. how did this come about ?
I think that me personally making some life decisions to abandon my more career oriented job led toward the ability of the band to tour more. We collectively decided, shortly after the release of Sovereign Descent, to try and get the band on the road more often.
2.You released vinyl for all three of your releases..Is vinyl important to the band considering your background in music?
Vinyl is very important, it is a tangiable object that cannot be duplicated, it presents the album artwork in a format that is way more pleasing and interesting than conventional CDs or cassettes. There is something special about playing one side of a record and having to get up and flip it. Much more appealing than clicking on files.
3. Did you take on any different approaches while recording Gallows?
I don’t think that our approach was any different than our previous efforts. I think we were much more confident in the songwriting and that the drumming, which in essence is the backbone of the music, was absurdly stronger than our previous recordings. Because we record with Ryan in his studio, we are afforded the ability to be meticulious and get a sound that we are very happy with. I think Ryan does a great job of channeling our live energy, especially on Gallows.
4. Favorite tour moment?
From a musical standpoint I would say when we play a show where the energy level is awesome and the audience connects. These moments justify all of the effort and sacrifice we put into the band to make this happen. From a non-musical standpoint, the friendships that are made blow me away. The fact that so many of us are strung together by this common thread, it is awesome. Touring reinforces those relationships and makes the world feel a little smaller and more comfortable
